The main goal of the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway project is to merge road safety with recreation access. Efforts to revitalize the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway will draw in tourists and economic growth opportunities to the area. With recreation-based tourism taking on increasing importance in the economies of Kittitas and Yakima Counties, such efforts are a larger priority now than they have been in the past.
